Horny as a Dandy - GHP/Loo and Placido

It's been a while since 'Mashed' the officially released Mashup Album from EMI and Mark Vidler's 'Go Home Productions' was put up on store shelves in Europe.  I ordered my copy from HMV when it first came out and I see that it is still not available on iTunes and am really disappointed to see the whopping price of $39.99 on Amazon.com.  So we thought we'd give you a little taste of what Loo and Placido (thanks Morgoth) and Mark think the Dandy Wharhols and Mousse T. sound like together.  It's a great album and really a collectors item for any die hard Mashup lover.  Make sure you head out and buy a copy.  Peace.

Two For Tuesday: A ToTom Two Step - Part I

This week's Two For Tuesday spotlights French producer ToTom.  In the first half of this basketball game we shed a little light on ToTom's mash-up titled "Hey Dance It Up Cosmic Ya."  This little recipe for fun includes Outkast's "Hey Ya," T-Rex's "Cosmic Dance" and "Smash It Up" by The Damned.  Although this mash-up might not be the greatest stereophonic deconstruction to hit the scene, nor perhaps what ToTom might describe (in my opinion) as his greatest work, it is, however, a very well structured mash-up.  From start to finish, this little chill-back melody hits your senses not with "in your face" dance grooves, or a techno-laden sound spectrum, rather, this mash-up tickles your ear with its seamless instrumental structure underpinning the sparse use of vocals.  Anyone familiar with any of the songs which form the basis of this mash-up will quickly realize that a new environment has been created.  ToTom evidences skillful sensibility weaving an instrumental from a song that is far from mellow (referring to "Hey Ya") through the T.Rex acapella to create a mellow, seamless melody.  A nice change to what's hit the great WWW in recent days.  This takes us back a few years but loses nothing during the travel time. Two For Tuesday: A ToTom Two Step - Part II

In Part Two of this week's Two For Tuesday, I spotlight another ToTom adventure.  This time we take a quick listen to "Idlewild Jesus Ribgy."  This particular little nugget of musical cross-breading involves Outkast's "Idlewild Blue," Beatles' "Eleanor Rigby" and "Personal Jesus" by Depeche Mode.  The marriage of the Depeche Mode instrumental and the Outkast pella are a great fit here.  Midway through the mash-up, ToTom creates a nice change of dynamic, almost like a version of a counter point melody found in classical music, when he changes the focus of the tune by making "Personal Jesus" the more prominent melody with Outkast vocal ad-libs filling in the background.  Then with a little over 90 seconds left in the mash-up he introduces the Beatles acapella.  Most of the time I would argue (and a few producers would agree) that adding a new element this late in the game tends to cause confusion and causes the mash-up to lose its general flow and identity.  I am not too far from making the same statement in this mash-up but I must qualify that remark by stating that the "Eleanor Rigby" pella tends to add something that does not automatically cause this mash-up to flounder.  I tend to attribute that to the overall general quality we've come to associate with the Beatles, but in particular Paul McCartney's voice.  Overall, this remains a nice little four and one-half star event.

Sunday Soundbyte: Tempting Adventure

Coming at you from Professor Quillam's Lab is this weekend's Sunday Soundbyte showcasing DJ Reset.  I'm not too sure where this homie-G is from but I will say he provides the listening world with a new perspective on the classic Temptations song "My Girl."  In his mash-up titled "My Girl Hotel,"  Reset provides a new patchwork backdrop on the innocent girl from "My Girl" turned R&B tramp in the song titled "Hotel" by Cassidy featuring R Kelly.  Many mash-ups crash and burn at the beginning stages due to improper instrumental selection (i.e., not in key).  However, this digital fusion stands on firm ground with the acoustic guitar riffs from "Hotel."  Reset provides a well structured format to give the mash-up direction and continuity.  Further, his use of the short stop-time segment two-thirds of the way into the song adds a nice change to the repetitive instrumental and a welcome "bridge" section (albeit short).  Overall, this mellow construction project evidences good production skills.  Notwithstanding the distinct sound quality differences between the pella and the instrumental, this one gets four and one half stars all the way to Motown.
