Microsoft's new service 'Songsmith' (LINK) could be a new addition to the mashup world. It allows people to strip out original instrumentals and replace them with tinny keyboards, banjo's, fiddles, or what have you. Below are some samples from the youtubes. How are they getting around copyrights? Do you consider this a pure Mashup? Discuss amongst your selves. Peace. Even Linus likes it.

Can you intentionally make a Songsmith track with *no* instrumental at all, thus garnering a copy of the acapella?

That would be interesting. A friend of mine showed me this YouTube video the other day plus the one with David Lee Roth... I like this one though.
(minor nitpick mode) You made a plural a possessive... should be mashups as opposed to mashup's(end minor nitpick mode). :P

Blech. It takes all the artistry out of mashing. I'm not impressed.

Thanks for linking to my videos -- I'm flattered that THE LINUS TORVALDS found me worth writing about.
