In part two of our L&P rewind moment we spotlight their mash-up titled "Toop Toop Groove." This mash-up blends the electronic stylings of Cassius (a French duo comprised of Phillipe Cerboneschi and Hubert Blanc-Francard) with the 80s pop sounds of Madonna. Once again, L&P show off an ability to combine two distinct and considerably divergent song elements to make one brand spankin' new song. Despite the nostalgia 80s pop may bring to those who grew up in the 80s, this mash-up appears to be able to re-create and improve upon Madonna's "Into the Groove." One particular place of noteworthy distinction begins at two minutes and twenty seconds into the mash-up. It is at this point L&P incorporate a song technique common in several genres, ranging from hip-hop, jazz, to classical. Specifically, they drop out all instrumental parts and feature only the four-to-the-floor bass, the synth and acapella. Effectively, this creates an eight bar phrase of tension that reaches its zenith when the rest of the instrumental elements are brought back in. This in turn creates forward momentum and tension thereby creating an even more evocative listening experience. Once again, fives stars all around for this one.
