This is a different one. Gord Burns aka ProCynic hails from Winnipeg, Manitoba up in Canada. Apparently there’s nothing to do in Winnipeg,
because Mr. Burns seems to have a lot of time to devote to his tracks (Okay, I
live there, and there is stuff to do,
but you get me). With Pixielated he deconstructed five
different Pixies tracks - Tame, Here
Comes Your Man, Dead, La La Love You, Hey, & Gouge Away - into countless samples and threw in an East
Indian sounding vocal from Gotan Project to create an
entirely new and satisfying listen. All
sounds come from one of those six tracks, much of it from Gouge Away. Gord explains
his motivation:
The concept was
simple. It was a reaction to my increasing dissatisfaction with electronic
music that continuously sounded “electronic”… the same synths, the same bass
sounds, the same structures and “ideas” expressed as music… blip, bleep,
bloop…My response was to find an album that wasn’t electronic focused… sample
the crap out of music from it that I resonated with… and then re-use those
samples as the base for a new production that would leverage “electronic”
production techniques (sample manipulations, effects, progressions &
structures etc.) while still drawing
from a sound pallet of natural instrumentation. I selected the Pixies as a lot of their material has a chugging feel
with some innovation and depth – much akin to an introspective rockabilly
wasted on morphine.
Experiment evaluation: Success! To check out other
ProCynic productions, hit up his myspace page HERE. And if anyone knows which Gotan Project song
is being sampled, let us know because Gord got the track from an unindexed
compilation. Enjoy!

Hey Lauren, thanks a bunch for the tip as to where the vox came from. I had this track on a Gotan Project compilation a friend made for me, but was unable to locate it in their works. Now I know why :) Much obliged! ~g
