Many of us remember the 80s being an era of quirky, fun, yet memorable pop hits. Among those which come to mind include A-Ha's "Take On Me," Wham's "Wake Me Up Before You Go-GO" and Tears For Fears' "Shout." In this edition of Two For Tuesday, I spotlight Belgium's own Ben Double M and his treatment of Tears For Fears' "Shout." I have often noted that producers who push the envelope by successfully utilizing not only 2, but 3, 4 or 5 songs in a mash-up are in a class of their own. A corollary to that statement concerns producers who are able to achieve a new emotion, space and visualization utilizing perhaps only 2 songs in a mash-up. This is exactly what Ben Double M achieves with his fusion of "Shout" and the industry-like quality that seems to be at the heart of Evanescene. The usual Pop-y nature that is Tears For Fears is transformed into something which captivates a darker light. No, "Shout Going Under" does not contain out-of-this world effects or techniques. However, this mash-up successfully pushes one song ("Shout") into a new, darker space. Let's not forget that quality does not always mean quantity.
