In part two of our "Two For Tuesday" segment we go back about a year and have one last lesson, brought to you courtesy of DJ Earworm. If the mash-up featured in part one of this week's "Two For Tuesday" segment could be renamed "Mash-up Lesson #9," this next mash-up would have to be renamed "Mash-up #10: Final Exam." DJ Earworm pulls out an even bigger bag of tricks with this "Paul Bunyan"-like production titled "Over the Confluence of Giants." Once again, form, content, and quality remain top priorities in this 6 song mash-up. From the outset, this appears to be a very mellow "Supertramp"-like groove created by the use of Under the Influence of Giants' "Take Your Mama," Steely Dan's "Do It Again" pella, Davie Bowie and the Pat Metheny Group's "This Is Not America," along with the classic sound of the Steve Miller Band's "Fly Like An Eagle" pella. Then, about 3 minutes into the piece, Earworm incorporates another dimension when he adds a "break" section outlined by Common's "Go" pella which then propels the listener into a well crafted coda headlined by the Steely Dan "Do It Again" pella. Earworm is able to keep all this together by creating a "Go" motif with the use of Common's "Go" and the "Take Your Mama" pella with a similar "go" lyric. Most great musical works employ simple yet fundamentally strong motifs to propel the song from its introduction through to the final chords. One historically popular example is the 4 note motif evidenced in Beethoven's 5th Symphony. To say I am comparing DJ Earworm to Beethoven is a stretch, so I will not make that comparison. I will simply let you decide where "Over the Confluence of Giants" fits into the mash-up spectrum. Go.
