Mashup Mark hits M-Town

It's always nice to find people who are giving there all to contribute to the mash-up scene. So it was a delight to hear from Mashup Mark today, and get some 411 on some of the projects he's got brewing up, which one of them includes a brand new mash-up radio show, expected to hit the Europeon FM airwaves in the next few weeks. (Stay tuned to mashuptown.com for more info on that.) Anyways, Mark has also been Dj'ing and producing tracks for quite a while now and is well on his way to leaving his mark in the scene. (No pun intended) So to welcome him to m-town we got his brand new "dance floor" mash up from him. Two For Tuesday: Sub-Urban Stylings - Part One

A kid from the Bronx, New York and a kid from Brooklyn, New York meet in a simple little construction job by Brat,this week's spotlight producer in PQ's Two For Tuesday.  In "Big Shot Pimpin'," Brat fuses Billy Joel's (born in the Bronx) Big Shot with Jay-Z's (born in Brooklyn) Big Pimpin' to create a relatively well packaged urban mash-up.  The ingredients compliment each other well here and Mr. Brat does a good job in letting the individual  parts create their own space within the mash-up.  With about 1/3 of the mash remaining, however, the mash does lose some of its drive, tonal center and connection between acapella and instrumental.  Much of that, though, is attributed to the Billy Joel ad lib section which at times seems to create a bit of a dissonance with the background harmony.  All in all, this Four-Star (out of five) mash-up is worth listening and enjoying.

Two For Tuesday: Sub-Urban Stylings - Part Two

The spotlight on this week's Two For Tuesday shines brightly on another Brat production.  In  "Dreaming In Your Sleep," the listener is treated to a mash-up where the marriage of acapella and instrumental creates a strong functional unit which is unfortunately somewhat downgraded by the hollow feeling left in the aural spectrum that appears to come about by the use of a high pass-like effect on Depeche Mode's Dream On acapella.  Although the effect itself is a clean, it tends to disassociate the acapella from the underlying instrumental to the extent that they appear not to be one functional unit.  Brat puts things back in gear, however, with a nicely produced vocoder segment utilizing the hook from The Romantics' Talking In Your Sleep.  As a Four Star production (out of five), this one is also a keeper.

Love Comes Running Up That Hill Quickly [DJ Magnet]

A new hauntingly & beautiful track brought us DJ Magnet, from Denver. In the beginning this should end as a Remix of Placebo's Cover of Running Up That Hill but in the end he couldn't resist to add some fine Pet Shop Boys and the original Kate Bush Tune. The sources working really nicely together. But be warned, I heard this track brought some tears in some bootleggers eyes. ;-)

Zamali, from Brussels, gave us a new Mash-Up for the Soul. Imagine the "Basement Jaxx", together with "Lisa Kekaula", met "Martha & The Vandellas" 42 years back in 1965. The result would be a wonderful track, which you can't get enough of!
