Jenifer Lopez vs. Stevie Wonder...ok I can buy that. J-Lo vs. Curt Kobain and Nirvana? That's just sacrilegious - no way man, not on my watch...or so I thought. Another example of the power and versatility of the Mashup or "Boot" as they like to call them across the pond. Take a listen to Lenlow's handy work and head on over to Mash Ave. Warning this track can become habit forming. Pure Floor Filla'. Props to Lenlow and you all have a great week.

Now there are many different sub classifications of what a falls in the cue of the Mashup genre. For example “Video Art”. It is a Visual artists involved with installation art, performance art and VJing closely related to music production which has recently taken up the concept of Mashup in their work. However, there is no term for this Video Art. I have coined the Word Refried tm for the “Video Art” sub genre of Mashup videos because in order to make refried beans one must first mash them, which is done to the audio portion of the video to make a Mashup song, and then refry them to give it its own unique flavor. This Refrying process takes places as the Video artist takes either a live performance or Music video and adds his own editing style to fuse these videos together giving the song a visual meaning.
The Medium is in the Message. What is implies is that a Song has a certain meaning when it is played at home, a Rally, on your Ipod, in the club, live in concert, or in a video Form. See a song can have one meaning however with the added visual it can place an entire new meaning to the song. Most Mashups are Versus songs meaning they consists of the combination (usually by digital means) of the instrumental from one song with the acapella from another. Such as The Surfaris Wipeout vs. D4L Laffy Taffy creating "Wipeout Taffy". Now Artist such as myself have a hard time piecing together a video where one song dose not have a video or one has to blend videos with two different storylines in order to convey a new message, create a different look, and still have it make sense. For Wipe out Taffy produced by Party Ben I attempted to create a video facing the challenge that The Surfaris never made a video or had a live performance for Wipeout. So I took Annette Funachello and Frankie Avalon in the Beach Black Bingo Movies because they were the Rebels of their time and blended it with DL4 music video because they are the rebels of our time. I proceeded to match up dancing, club, pillow fighting, and car scenes, to show that there are not many difference between the wholesome white rebels of the past and the ‘Women Objectifing Black Rebels of Today.” I chose this mashup because in the sea of well-publicized mashups this was one of the few hip-hop mashups. Most of the mashups I have come across are predominately Anglo musical blends and have little Urban Ethnic appeal. However I was drawn to this mashup and created a Refried video to bring two worlds together that most could not see ever coming together.
